Jr Cougars to host provincial championship

Published on

The final seconds was a nail-biting session for the Cardston fans, but the junior Cougars are on their way to the provincial championships.

The Cougars scored a 28-21 win over the Lethbridge Stampeders Saturday to capture the Southern Alberta Minor Football league title.

The Cougars will host the Sherwood Park Rams in the provincial Bantam final next Saturday.  Game time is 11 a.m.

Cardston's defence went up in the final 16 seconds of the game when the Stamps scored a touchdown to bring the score to it's finale.  Coach Dave Prete, Cougars head coach for the past three years, says he is proud of his boys.

"This is the most unified team I've ever coached," said Prete, who gave a ton of credit to the Stamps.

"They came here to fight, and they did just that."

Prete credits a lot to the speed of Cougars.  He says this speed won the game, but speed can't be taught.

Earlier in the second quarter, with Cougars down 14-0, Tyler Boyson scored the first touchdown of the game with a 22-yard run.  The second touchdown was scored by Todd Wilson on a 68-yard run.

Boyson scored the Cougars third touchdown with a blasting 80-yard run.

The Cougars final touchdown was scored by Bob Jensen with a centre sneak and 15-yard run.
